He is an E-RYT 500 Yoga Alliance certified teacher and is currently leading the 200, 300, & 500 hour programs at Maa Shakti Yog in Rishikesh, India and Bali, Indonesia.

Q.Namaste Yogi Sumit Ji please tell us about your journey of yoga.

Namaste! Being born & brought up in Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in India, I began my yoga practice journey at the age of 14 years. I studied classical Hatha yoga at Uttrakhand Sanskrit University, Haridwar, Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore and Acro Yoga in Goa. I always believed in experiencing yoga first as a student before teaching it to others. Later, I started teaching yoga since 2013.

Q. So, What is your speciality in yoga teaching?

I teach multi style yoga. My focus is on teaching human anatomy before teaching yoga poses. Muscle memory is highly important in the field of yoga teaching. Muscle memory refers to the ability of our muscles to remember and repeat movements or postures that have been frequently practiced. It plays a crucial role in yoga asanas (postures) and the overall practice. When students learn to develop muscle memory, they become more attuned to the sensations and alignment of their bodies in different poses. It helps them understand the proper engagement of muscles and promotes a deeper mind-body connection.

Besides, I always like to familiarize my students with the vedic concepts of the subtle body, energy channels (nadis), energy centers (chakras) for deeper understanding of yoga.

Q. I am sure it would be great to learn all this. So, Sumit Ji now a days there is lot of talk about wellness, specially in post pandemic era. Would you like to tell us your perspective about wellness.

Well, I believe wellness is about having a good relationship with yourself irrespective of what others feel about you. There are two things very important for wellness. First self-acceptance & then self-care.

Self-Acceptance is about accepting oneself as one is, with all strengths and limitations. It is crucial for a happy relationship with oneself. This involves cultivating self-compassion, embracing imperfections, and letting go of self-judgment. Recognizing and celebrating personal achievements, both big and small, can also contribute to self-acceptance.

After acceptance, prioritizing self-care is essential for overall wellness. This involves engaging in activities that promote physical health, such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, and sufficient rest. It also includes taking care of one’s mental and emotional well-being by practicing stress management techniques, mindfulness, and seeking support when needed.

Q. Wow! that was really insightful. We would really like to have a message from you for the youth or for the new generation.

Take the time to truly know yourself. Explore your passions, interests and values. Reflect on what brings you joy and fulfillment. Be fully engaged in whatever you do, whether it’s studying, pursuing your hobbies or spending time with loved ones. Discovering your authentic self will guide you in making choices aligned with your true nature.

Embrace a spirit of curiosity and a love for learning throughout your life. Seek knowledge, expand your horizons, and explore new subjects. Never stop growing, for learning is a lifelong journey that enriches your perspective and opens doors to new opportunities.
