Ashtanga Ayurveda are the 8 branches of Ayurveda system of medicine. ‘Ashtanga‘ is a sanskrit term made up of two words ‘ashta‘ meaning ‘8’ and ‘anga‘ meaning ‘limb’. So, ‘ashtanga’ means “eight limbs,”. Ashtanga Ayurveda refers to the eight branches or eight components of ancient Ayurveda system of medicine. Each of the limb or branch focuses on a different aspect of health and well-being. These eight branches are:
Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine): This branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases and disorders. Like diabetes, arthritis, and digestive disorders.
Shalya Tantra (Surgery):This branch deals with surgical procedures such as the removal of tumors, hernias, and other growths. Shalya also deals with the treatment of traumatic injuries.
Shalakya Tantra (ENT-Otorhinolaryngology and Ophthalmology): This branch focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of eye, ear, nose, and throat disorders.
Kaumarabhritya (Pediatrics and Obstetrics): This branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda deals with the health and well-being of children, right from the conception through gestation period and upto adolescence stage.
Bhoot Vidya (Psychiatry): This branch deals with mental health and psychological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
Agada Tantra (Toxicology): This branch focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by various poisons and toxins. Like mercury, arsenic, aconite, datura and different types of snakebites.
Rasayana Tantra (Rejuvenation and Geriatrics): This branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda focuses on natural methods to promote longevity and delaying the aging process. Such as to prevent debility, dementia, hairfall, wrinkles etc.
Vajikarana Tantra (Fertility and Aphrodisiacs): This branch deals with the diagnosis and treatment of infertility and other reproductive health issues, such as erectile dysfunction, oligospermia and hormonal imbalances.
Ashtanga Ayurveda 8 branches of Ayurveda are taught in all Ayurveda medical institutions. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to health and wellness. Ayurveda principles focus on balancing the mind, body, and spirit to ensure complete wellbeing. It utilizes natural remedies, including herbs, oils, and dietary recommendations, to promote optimal health and prevent diseases.
